Sprayberry's BBQ

Bill and I had identical meals in this BBQ joint with fading and ancient Zagat Ratings on the door. There's nothing bad about Sprayberry BBQ. It's certainly a step above national chains like Sonny's. But if you're used to great Alabama chains like Jim and Nicks or Dreamland, you'll leave disappointed. For my South Carolina friends, I'll simply say this: if this restaurant was across the street from Maurice's, I'd visit big Mo 175 times in a row before even considering crossing the road for a bite of Sprayberry's.

The meat isn't anything special and the decidedly average vinegar based sauce does nothing to help. The sides are also the definition of ordinary. The Mac and Cheese was acceptable. The steak fries were hot. The Sweat tea didn't require any extra sugar packets, which to me is a big deal.

On our way out the cashier asked if everything was "okay." It was. But that's the wrong question. The proper query is "Was this meal excellent?" Sadly, the answer was a firm "no."

5 of 10.

  1. If they are serving sweat tea, I think I'll take a Coke :)

Is there any place you'd visit over Maurice's? Be honest.
