Lunch on May 25, 2011
This place is not exactly a secret if you travel on I-85 between Atlanta and Montgomery. Sprayberry's BBQ has been around for 85 years and is located in Newnan, GA.
Today both Jonathan and I had the "Lewis Grizzard Special" That consists of a BBQ sandwich with the meat of your choice and 2 sides. I had chopped pork with potato salad and mac-n-cheese. Sprayberry's is very consistent withe their fare. I have eaten here a lot over the years and while the food is not particularly great, it is always the same.
The plates are served with a few Bread and Butter pickles which I like and think adds a nice touch. The meat tastes like.......well.....smoked pork. It is the sauce that makes this taste different for this area. Typical GA and AL sauces are tomato(ketchup) based with a sweet flavor. This is not the case at all here. The sauce is vinegar based and leaves no doubt about that especially if you are thinking sweet BBQ when it hits the taste buds. Good in a Carolina BBQ kinda way, but absolutely not sweet. The potato salad was tasty but a bit dry. If you've ever eaten south Alabama tater salad, you know it is generally pretty wet (mustard and /or mayo), this was not. Tasty but not great. The mac-n-cheese. I get this every time I go there and it is always the same. Homemade mac-n-cheese is just hard to beat. Not amazing, just good.
The plate goes for $9.95 plus another 2 bucks for a drink and a tip gets you out for less than $15.
Again, this place is good but not great. Go once, and you'll know what is there any other time you think about stopping in for a bite.
On a scale of 1 to 10, I'm giving Sprayberry's a 6.5
Bill
