We had a pretty long day at the track on Thursday and didn't get back to the hotel until 9:30ish. We decided to eat at a pizza place just across the street. Fuel Pizza could be classified as a local chain as there are several locations around the Charlotte metro. We are okay with "local" chains, just not the ones you can hit at every other exit on any major highway.
Pizza is available by the slice and they also have, stromboli, calzones, and several other menu choices. Since it we had not eaten since before noon and I thought I was hungrier than I actually was, I ordered "The Whole Engine". A thin crusted, hand tossed pie covered with a very nicely flavored red sauce, mild Italian sausage, small meatballs, roasted onions, green peppers, fresh mushrooms and topped off with mozzarella.
While I was eating it, I told Jonathan that it might be the best pizza I had ever eaten. 2 slices later, I realized that, while it was good, it wasn't anything special. I think the initial greatness was because I was just hungry.
The atmosphere is supposedly inside an old gas station, There was an old pump, old oil cans and various other things to sell that image. It was a nice visual tie in to the name of the place and worked pretty well.
Overall, just an okay place to get pizza. Would I go again? If I'd been shooting video at the speedway all day and had not eaten in 9 hours and I was staying at the hotel right across the street.... absolutely. If not, I probably would not.
Food gets a 5, atmosphere a 6.
